Chattanooga Red Wolves Sign Homegrown Talent Yahir Paez to Professional Contract

The Chattanooga Red Wolves are pleased to announce the signing of midfielder Walter Varela for the 2023 USL League One season. Transaction pending league and Federation approval.

Playing predominantly as an attacking midfielder or on the wing, Varela is skilled with both feet and can play on both sides of the pitch. The midfielder said that the city of Chattanooga and Head Coach Ziggy Korytoski played a major part in his decision to come and play for the Red Wolves. “Chattanooga is a beautiful city, and people here love soccer, so the stadium is always full of fans which makes soccer more enjoyable as a player. Ziggy told me he was coming here, having played for him last season, we have a great relationship and I believe we can be successful together with the Red Wolves.”


A 26-year-old midfielder from Boston, MA, Varela began his career with Bunker Hill Community-College, where he was named to the collegiate Division III All-American Team. Walter played for NPSL side Valeo FC and Brockton FC from the UPSL before eventually moving to play with Albion San Diego where he made 19 appearances, scoring 3 goals and contributing 4 assists in over 1,600 minutes of play.

On addressing the fans ahead of his move to Chattanooga, Varela said, “I couldn’t ask for a better team or city to play for, I’m excited and can’t wait to represent the city and play in front of the outstanding crowd at CHI Memorial Stadium.” He went on to say that the goal for 2023 is clear, “My goal is to help the team win the league. The team was close last year and made its first league final, and this year we are coming back stronger with the goal of winning a championship.”
