First-year Racing Louisville head coach Bev Yanez has added to her staff, appointing Mitch Sowerby as an assistant coach, the club announced Friday.

Sowerby, 29, joins Racing after successful men’s head coaching stints at Division II program Oklahoma Christian University and NAIA program Mid-America Christian University, where his team won the 2019 National Christian College Athletics Association championship and he won national coach of the year.

A native of Newcastle, England, Sowerby has a mutual coaching contact and friend with Yanez in former NJ/NY Gotham FC head coach and current Seattle Reign assistant coach Scott Parkinson. Sowerby and Yanez both completed their U.S. Soccer Federation A coaching license course in 2023 and developed a connection there. Sowerby also holds an English Football Association Level 1 license.

“When you are looking to build a staff, you are looking for specific roles to be filled dependent on how you want to run your environment,” Yanez said. “Mitch was excellent in the process, not only showcasing his remarkable ability but really showing who he is as a person. He is a good person who will do whatever it takes for the group to be successful. This selfless perspective, in combination with his knowledge and ability, made us very excited to have him here at Racing. He is invested in the vision and will be an excellent addition in so many aspects. People enjoy working with good people, and players will learn more around people they respect.”

“Adding Mitch to our technical staff was an important off-season priority to round out Bev’s staff,” said Racing general manager Ryan Dell. “He is a very sharp young coach whose knowledge of the game fits in well with our Racing Louisville culture. We are thrilled to see his impact on and off the pitch with our current staff and players.”

“I am extremely grateful to both Bev and Ryan for giving me an opportunity to be a part of something special,” Sowerby said. “It’s a real honor to work with such a dedicated and talented group of players and staff members. This is going to be a special year on and off the field for Racing Louisville FC led by Bev, and I cannot wait to get to work.”
