Gary Neville has slammed rumours that Manchester United are set to extend Victor Lindelof and Raphael Varane‘s contracts.

This comes ahead of the January transfer window, the first since Sir Jim Ratcliffe‘s partial takeover of the Red Devils.

Mail Sport exclusively revealed Man United have declined to take up an option to trigger a one-year extension of Varene’s £340,000-a-week contract by the January 1 deadline.

However, the Red Devils remain interested in extending Varane’s stay at Old Trafford however, and plan to open talks over a new deal.

Taking to X to vent his frustrations, Neville urged United to start fresh when discussing the potential of his former side renewing the contracts of Lindelof and Varane.

‘If United are looking to renew Lindelof and Varane (on reduced terms) I’m worried,’ he admitted.

‘We have to start afresh as much as possible.’

Neville continued to explain the reason that he’d be worried with the club extending Lindelof and Varane’s deals beyond the end of the season.

He said:  ‘Whilst these 2 aren’t bad players by any stretch, a message must be sent to everyone inside and outside of the club that it’s not going to tolerate the levels over the last few years.’

Erik ten Hag has struggled with injuries in his defence this season, seeing Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire make up the partnership at the back for the majority of the season.
