Comets Top Ambush 6-5 for Second Win this Week

Comets Crash Wave 10-4 Saturday Night

December 31, 2023 – Major Arena Soccer League (MASL)Kansas City Comets News Release

ST. CHARLES, MO. – The Comets (6-1-0) and the St. Louis Ambush (1-5-1) met for the second time in a week, and Kansas City notched their second win in four days against their in-state rival, this time by a 6-5 final at the Family Arena. Zach Reget finished the game with five points for the Comets in the win, including a hat trick.

The first half was truly a tale of two quarters as St. Louis put the only two goals of the first 15 minutes on the scoreboard, first from Marcel Berry and then Skylar Funk.

Kansas City answered with a pair of markers of their own beginning with the first of Reget’s three goals in the game. A direct strike on a restart from the top of the arc cut the Ambush lead to 2-1 with 13:56 still to go in the half.

Following a flurry of blue cards, Kansas City evened the game at 2-2 when Reget sent a pass to the top of the arc and a charging Ray Lee beat St. Louis keeper Paulo Nascimento with 8 minutes to go until halftime.

Three straight goals from the Comets extended their lead to 5-2 with 6:34 to play in the third quarter with goals by Lee, Reget, and Michael Lenis.

It was a blue card to Nacho Flores that put St. Louis on the power play and stopped Kansas City’s run of five unanswered goals. Former Comet James Togbah set up for a restart to the right of Kansas City keeper Nicolau Neto and drove the ball just inside the near post to make it a 5-3 Comets lead with 5:21 to go in the third.

Reget completed his hat trick to give the Comets their three-goal lead back before Lucas Almeida netted another power play goal for St. Louis and send the game to the fourth quarter with Kansas City in front by a 6-4 score.

The only goal of the final quarter came too late for St. Louis when William Eskay scored with 26 seconds remaining.

Lee finished the game with three points on two goals and an assist for the Comets while Neto picked up 13 saves en route to his sixth win in goal for Kansas City.

The Comets’ first home game of 2024 kicks off at 6:05 pm on January 6 when Franck Tayou and Utica City FC visit Cable Dahmer Arena. Don’t miss this bout between two of the MASL’s top teams! Get your tickets today at www.kccomets.com before they sell out.
