Tech falls to No. 13 North Carolina in first round of ACC Championships

Box Score CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Virginia Tech fell to No. 13 North Carolina, 4-1, on Wednesday evening at Dorrance Field in the first round of the ACC Championships.

The Hokies’ day started promising, as Misei Yoshizawa scored the earliest goal of the season for Tech less than two minutes into the match. Declan Quill played a ball down the line to Conor Pugh, who squared a ball into the box that Yoshizawa wrapped his body around and placed into the bottom left corner.

North Carolina was quick to respond in the first half and found a breakthrough in the 29th from Quenzie Huerman.

It looked as if Tech might escape the first half by only giving up one goal to a multitude of chances, but Carolina converted its 10th shot of the half to go into the halftime break with a 2-1 lead.

Down a goal, Virginia Tech put together an improved number of chances in the second half, however, North Carolina’s keeper was there to match each opportunity on goal.

The seventh-seeded hosts added two more goals in the second half to secure a 4-1 victory – ending Virginia Tech’s season in the first round of the ACC Championship. Wednesday’s result marks Tech’s first season without a postseason victory since 2015.
