Minnesota United FC News Release

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — Minnesota United is off to the best start in the club’s MLS history with 17 points from its first nine matches of the season as the team travels to face Atlanta United FC for the first time since the 2019 U.S. Open Cup Final.

The Loons last week earned three points and a win against Sporting Kansas City, and midfielder Robin Lod continued his goal-contribution stride; Lod now has 10 goal contributions across the past eight matches, ranking himself among the best in the league in that category, behind only Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi (16) and Real Salt Lake’s Chicho Arango (15). Additionally, Lod is tied for the most assists provided across MLS with those two players with seven.

Minnesota enters the match against Atlanta having yet again seen a goal scored by striker Tani Oluwaseyi and two more goal contributions by midfielder Robin Lod against SKC last weekend. Additionally, center back Michael Boxall scored the opening goal last week to help lead the Loons to another three points. With the Loons off to their best start in MLS action in club history, the momentum looks to be carried into a difficult road environment at Mercedes-Benz Stadium against a powerful Atlanta offense.

The Georgia side features notable offensive threats in Thiago Almada and Giorgio Giakoumakis leading the attack. Though the Atlanta offense has continued to be a challenge for opposing teams in 2024, their form has been plateaued at the moment, having played to a draw in three out of the last four matches, and the other result during that stretch was a loss. With that form, the Atlanta side seeks to earn a much-needed win while it faces a striving MNUFC squad looking to continue its winning ways on the road.

“It’s probably another level, I haven’t watched loads of them yet, but another level based on what we’ve played so far in terms of forwards. I will say that it seems to be a real threat to every game that you play at the moment. It was the same with Kansas [Sporting Kansas City] and it’s been the same with a large majority of the teams we’ll play where you look at the front players and you think there is a relatively big difference between the level of quality, the transfer fees that’s spent on that part of the pitch, relative to the rest. It will be similar messages, but maybe there’s a…
