Pundit slams ‘idiot’ Antony as Ten Hag urged to deal with Man Utd forward’s attitude problem

Antony, Manchester United, April 2023

Gabby Agbonlahor has slammed Manchester United winger Antony for being an “idiot” in an outburst against Brighton, as he feels Erik ten Hag has “got to speak to him” about his attitude.

Antony hasn’t had a bad start to his United career. The Brazilian has been directly involved in 10 goals in various competitions throughout the season.

While that return doesn’t suggest he’s been a huge asset, there’s certainly promise that he could be quite impactful.

However, Agbonlahor feels the winger is carrying himself in the wrong way on the field.

“I think he’s a bit of an idiot, to be honest,” he told Football Insider.

That reaction follows United’s loss to Brighton in their latest game. Antony was involved in an incident where he ran up to Lewis Dunk following a tackle and barged into him with his chest, which Agbonlahor felt was unnecessary.

“There was no need for that tackle on Mac Allister, and then he’s trying to go chest to chest with a giant in Lewis Dunk. He’d have destroyed him,” Agbonlahor added.

The pundit posed that the reason for Antony’s attitude is that he’s not in the best of form; there was a 14-game period before the Nottingham Forest game in April in which he did not score or assist in the league.

“Is Antony frustrated with his own performance, and that’s why he’s lashing out?” he said.

“He can’t take a player on, he can’t beat a man, he can’t get a shot on goal. He’s got to be frustrated with his own performances this season.”

Agbonlahor also feels that Ten Hag has got to get him to sort his attitude, which could mean his game progresses from where it is at the moment.

“Ten Hag has got to speak to him about it. He’s got to calm down or he’ll get red cards,” he said.

“He’s got to try and become the £86million player he was brought in to be.”

While he was clearly angered in the heat of the moment, that’s not to suggest this will keep happening. However, United and Antony himself would surely rather he was putting in big performances week in, week out, rather than occasionally, and that will take him being in the right frame of mind.
