‘Who needs Mudryk?’ Pundit not worried for Arsenal after Chelsea hijack thanks to ‘fantastic’ trio

Mykhaylo Mudryk and Chris Sutton

Chris Sutton does not think Arsenal will rue missing out on Mykhaylo Mudryk after the Ukrainian winger joined Chelsea for €100million.

Arsenal made Mudryk their top target this month and lodged three bids to Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Ukrainian champions were not happy with the bonuses and clauses in the deal and Chelsea swooped in with a similar overall fee, but much more realistic add-ons.

The overall transfer fee is expected to reach €100m (£88.5m) with the Blues adding another striker to their ranks.

It is unclear who Arsenal are now pursuing after losing out on Mudryk.

They have been linked with a host of attacking players, including summer target Raphinha and his Barcelona teammate Ferran Torres.

Mikel Arteta’s squad is pretty thin and they missed out on top four in 2021-22 after failing to recruit a new striker, and the Spaniard will be hoping to avoid a similar outcome this term.

Former Blackburn Rovers and Celtic striker Chris Sutton has backed Arsenal to be fine after Chelsea hijacked their deal to sign Mudryk.

Sutton wrote in his Daily Mail column: “You have had an outstanding first half. Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Eddie Nketiah: all fantastic.

“When Gabriel Jesus is fit again, he will need to be at the top of his game to replace you, Eddie.

“Mykhaylo Mudryk isn’t here but who needs him? You showed your superiority in that win at Spurs.”

Arsenal bounced back from their failure to sign Mudryk with a convincing 2-0 win against Tottenham in the north London derby.

Sutton also discussed the Gunners’ title credentials with Arteta’s men eight points clear of reigning champions Manchester City.

“You may have heard how it’s ‘your title to lose’. Take no notice. There will be blips. It’s more about how you bounce back.

“At the start of this season, the BBC asked 23 pundits to pick their top four. No one had Arsenal first. Or second. Or third. Aren’t you loving proving us wrong? Don’t lose that and you might just win this.”

As well as Raphinha and Torres, Arsenal were linked with Bayer Leverkusen winger Moussa Diaby.

According to Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth, the Gunners have made ‘initial contact’ with the German club.

Newcastle United have also been linked with Diaby, however, Leverkusen will reportedly ask for €100m should a club make an enquiry this month.
