Vincent Kompany jokes he wouldn't take Cristiano Ronaldo at Burnley

Manchester City legend and Burnley manager Vincent Kompany has joked that he would not sign free agent Cristiano Ronaldo due to his work rate.

Ronaldo parted ways with Manchester United on Tuesday following a mutual agreement in the aftermath of his explosive interview with Piers Morgan last week.

Various clubs have already been linked with a move for Ronaldo, such as Chelsea, PSG and Sporting CP.

Kompany is currently working as a pundit for BBC during the 2022 World Cup, and he was providing analysis of France’s clash with Australia hours after Ronaldo’s exit from United was confirmed.

When asked by Gary Lineker if he would take Ronaldo at Burnley, Kompany replied: “We need players who can run!”

Ronaldo’s work rate during the latter years of his career has often been called into question, particularly after becoming an out-and-out centre forward.

His inability to press saw him dropped on occasion by United interim manager Ralf Rangnick during parts of the 2021/22 season, while he was never favoured by current Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag.

Kompany’s Burnley are currently three points clear at the top of the Championship table, with the Belgian excelling during his first season as a manager in English football.
