Leipzig boss insists Nkunku to Chelsea link is just ‘speculation’ as Potter rejects questions

Marco Rose talks about Chelsea

RB Leipzig boss Marco Rose says claims Chelsea have struck a pre-contract agreement to sign Christopher Nkunku next summer are just “speculation”.

Reports have claimed that Chelsea are ‘set to pay slightly more than Nkunku’s £52.58m release clause to ensure they sign him’ and that ‘barring any major hitches’ the France international will join the Blues next summer.

But when asked about the reports that Nkunku will be a Chelsea player next summer, Rose called it “speculation”.

During his pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Rose said: “It’s speculation, we don’t comment on it. We don’t care, we don’t care.”

And Chelsea boss Graham Potter was similarly closed on the subject of Nkunku when asked about the rumours in the media.

Potter told reporters: “My answer is that I don’t speak about players that aren’t Chelsea players. It was the same at Brighton. There are a lot of names out there but I will only speak about Chelsea players and not anyone else.”

On whether he would be interested in signing Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo, Potter dismissed that questioning in a similar fashion, he replied: “We can spend all day with these questions but I’m not going to speak about this. If they are not out players, I am not going to speak to them.”

Chelsea face AC Milan tomorrow in the Champions League group stage and Potter updated the media with the latest injury news.

Potter added: “Edouard [Mendy] has been training with the team the last few days so he will be in the squad which is good news for us because we need as much competition for places.

“Jorginho felt some discomfort against Crystal Palace but has trained today. We’ll see how he reacts to that. Kai [Havertz] had a slight feeling after Palace but trained today.

“N’Golo Kante is training more and more. Not fully but getting closer. So that’s really positive. That’s about it I think.”

On Milan and former Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud, Potter continued: “There is a clear idea of how they want to attack and defend. They have different ways to score. Giroud is someone Chelsea know very well. He is a fantastic player and plays the game in a really good way, uses his quality and strengths.

“I’m looking forward to the game. They are a top team and we will have to be really good to get the result we want.”
