Tim Sherwood has claimed that Jordan Henderson ‘was a better captain’ than Steven Gerrard during their respective times at Liverpool. 

Henderson called an end to his time in Merseyside during the 2023 summer transfer window, when he secured a lucrative move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq.

However, things didn’t work out for the England international – who has since opted for a return to Europe and joined Dutch giants Ajax during the January window. 

Despite his recent turmoil, it hasn’t been enough to tarnish his Liverpool legacy, with Sherwood going as far to say Henderson is ‘the greatest captain Liverpool have had in the Premier League era’.

Speaking to William Hill, Sherwood offered up his all-time Liverpool XI and, when discussing his midfield options, said: ‘Moving onto midfield, Steven Gerrard has to be in there, and I know my next player will cause a bit of a stir but I’ve got my reasons – Jordan Henderson

‘For me, Henderson is the greatest captain Liverpool have had in the Premier League era. I think he was a better captain than Steven Gerrard because Henderson won the Premier League and the Champions League. 

‘Obviously Stevie was brilliant and they won the Champions League with him too.

‘From a captain’s perspective, Henderson gives you more than what you see on the pitch and, Stevie might’ve done that as well, but Jordan is a manager’s dream. 

‘He’ll stick his team in line and push them in the right direction in terms of how to play for Liverpool and what the demands are from the manager. 

Henderson had been a crucial part of Liverpool’s side since joining the club for £20m from Sunderland back in 2011.
