Langley, BC – Vancouver FC will take on the reigning Canadian Premier League (CPL) regular season champions Cavalry FC in the Eagle’s first match of the 2024 TELUS Canadian Championship, the club announced on Friday. The match will be hosted at ATCO Field in Calgary, Atla., between April 23, 2024 and May 1, 2024.

“We are very excited to be competing in our second Canadian Championship,” said Afshin Ghotbi, Head Coach, Vancouver FC. “We have worked very hard in the off-season to build a competitive squad who can challenge reigning champions and we look forward to battling for the Voyageurs Cup starting in April.”

The 2024 TELUS Canadian Championship will be Vancouver’s second appearance in the tournament after making its debut against York United FC in April 2023 as the club’s second-ever match in its inaugural season.

On Thursday, Canada Soccer announced the 2024 TELUS Canadian Championship format which includes nineteen total matches culminating with the Final in late September. The opening stage Preliminary Round will be played in a single-match format with twelve clubs entering into West and East regionalized brackets. The six Preliminary Round matches will be played between Apr. 23 and May 1.

The six winning clubs from the Preliminary Round will advance to the Quarter-Final stage which will be played in a two-match home and away series format with matches scheduled throughout the month of May. VFC has the potential to face 2023 Voyageurs Cup champions Vancouver Whitecaps FC, who received a first-round bye, in the Quarter-Finals.

Following the completion of the Preliminary and Quarter-Final Rounds, Canada Soccer will conduct a secondary draw to determine the matchups for the Semi-Final Round and determine the Host Club for the Final Match. This additional draw has been added to remove structural regionalization for the Semi-Final and Final rounds of the competition.

The four remaining clubs will advance to the Semi-Final stage which will be contested in a two-match home and away format, with the first leg played between Jul. 9-10 and the second leg played Aug. 27-28.

The 2024 TELUS Canadian Championship Final will be played as a single match on Sept. 24 or Sept. 25.

The date and time of Vancouver’s Preliminary Round match against Cavalry will be announced in the coming weeks.
