Halifax, NS – The Halifax Wanderers have signed Canadian defender Kareem Sow to a contract through the 2025 CPL season with a club option for 2026.

Sow, 23, joins the Wanderers after a five-year career at the University of Montreal, winning a national championship in 2021.

“Kareem is a player who has shown a great loyalty to the club, knows our game and what is expected of him,” Wanderers head coach Patrice Gheisar said. “He has been a really important part of a winning program in Montreal, and his versatility along the back line is a massive addition for us.”

Sow was selected 10th overall by the Wanderers in the 2021 CPL – U SPORTS Draft. He signed to a U SPORTS Developmental contract for the 2021 season, making 11 appearances. The Wanderers signed Sow to an additional U SPORTS contract in 2022, with the defender making five more appearances.

Throughout his career, Sow has remained committed to his education. He is set to graduate with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

“I am very excited, and I see this as my first real professional contract,” Sow said. “Halifax is very special to me, and I’ve loved every summer I have been there. The Wanderers have put a lot of trust in me to finish my degree, and I can’t wait to focus 100% on football and give everything I have.”

Passionate about the Halifax community, Sow returned to the city briefly in 2023 and featured for the Wanderers U23 side in the International Summer Series against Holstein Kiel played throughout the Maritimes. He also trained with the first team and helped coach at summer soccer camps.

“We’ve been intentionally methodical and patient in support of Kareem’s academic commitments while immersing him in our environment over the past few seasons,” sporting director Matt Fegan said. “We are strong believers in the value of gaining an education wherever possible and the beauty of the CPL U SPORTS contracts is to provide some flexibility to work with this level of talent and continue to provide these opportunities.

Kareem is someone who embodies our club values and has the qualities to make the step to the professional game. Our consistent long-term plan was to integrate him into the full first team plans once he graduated, and we’re looking forward to Kareem taking those next steps with the club now.”
