Premier League clubs have shelled out a whopping £3.7BILLION in winter windows since 1992… but which side contributed an eye-watering £632m alone to that total?

The 2024 January transfer window may have been the quietest in recent memory – but that’s not to say that Premier League clubs don’t splash out in the winter months.

Since the inception of the Premier League in 1992, 51 clubs have featured in England’s top flight and have bought and sold players to improve their squads during that time.

The winter window is traditionally a lot slower than its summer counterpart given that clubs are more likely to stick with their squads and make adjustments in the off-season.

But data collected by Mail Sport reveals that Premier League clubs have still shelled out a staggering £3.7billion in the winter months alone in a 32-year period.

But before we get onto the biggest – and lowest – spenders, let’s take a quick look at how transfer windows came to be.

Up until the 2002-03 campaign when the current transfer window system was introduced, Premier League clubs were free to sign and move on players throughout the season until March 31.

Transfer windows were then introduced as part of an agreement with the European Commission as they looked to regulate how transfers worked. This saw prescribed periods for players to complete moves, which came in the summer and winter months.

So with that in mind, spending figures during the months of December to February were taken as the ‘winter window’ period between 1992 and 2002.

But which clubs have notoriously splashed the cash during the middle of the season and which sides have been a little more reluctant to fork out for players?
