  • The midfielder was strongly linked with a move away from club in the summer
  • He has scored five goals in 18 appearances this season in a more advanced role
  • Both McTominay and Harry Maguire are said to be vital to plans going forward

Manchester United are looking to tie Scott McTominay down to a new longer-term contract, according to a report.

The Scot has long been linked with a move away from the club, with West Ham holding a log-term interest in his services and negotiating with the Red Devils over a deal in the summer transfer window.

A move never materialised, however, and he has impressed officials at Old Trafford this season, scoring five goals in 18 Premier League appearances, including braces against both Brentford and Chelsea.

While just 12 of his 18 appearances in the league this term have been as a substitute, his role in the team has become clearer as he starts to feature in more forward areas under Erik ten Hag

According to The Sun, McTominay has won over Ten Hag and is now key to the Dutchman’s plans going forward at the club, with United keen to active a 12-month extension on his deal.

McTominay has made a total of 233 appearances for United since making his debut for the club having just turned 20 towards the end of the 2016/17 season.

He has played under six managers including interim coaches Michael Carrick and Ralf Rangnick, having been given his debut under Louis van Gaal and featuring for Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ten Hag.

While he has failed to nail down a starting place over the years, he represents good value for money having come throught the United academy and has represented the club well when he has been involved with the team.

In December, the 27-year-old publicly backed his manager amid criticism during a poor run of form, branding him ‘great’ after a 0-0 draw against Liverpool at Anfield.
