Getafe have appealed a straight red card shown to Mason Greenwood earlier this week in a tense battle with Rayo Vallecano according to reports.

Greenwood was given his marching orders in the 50th minute of Tuesday’s clash with Rayo Vallecano with his side already down to 10 and two goals down at home for dissent.

The forward has been with the LaLiga outfit since summer transfer deadline day when he arrived from Manchester United, and has gone on to be an important player for Getafe.

However Tuesday’s red card could see him face a lengthy suspension, after referee Jorge Figueroa Vasquez judged his furious reaction to not receiving a foul to be crossing the line, claiming after the match that Greenwood had said ‘F*** you!’ to him.

Now, the Spanish side are thought to have appealed the sanction against their player, as per reports from Marca, and are believed to be expecting a response imminently as they await the decision on his suspension.

Such a spell on the sidelines could see Greenwood miss crucial league clashes with Osasuna, Grenada and giants Real Madrid.

The official’s post-match report reads: ‘In the 50th minute the player (12) Greenwood, Mason Will John, was sent off for the following reason: For addressing me in a sign of protest and raising his arm, in the following terms: ‘F*** you’.

‘Once sent off, he takes the finger to the temple making a repeated gesture as a sign of disagreement with the decision made.’

Greenwood however argued that this was not the case, and insisted that he had not said directed the swear word specifically at the referee according to Spanish reports.
