Mangione Named United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-American


UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State men’s soccer senior forward Peter Mangione has been named to the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America First Team, the organization announced Friday. 
 
Mangione, a political science major, tabs academic honors for the second-straight season. He was placed on the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America Second Team last season. 
 
In order to be eligible for the recognition from the United Soccer Coaches, each student-athlete must be a junior or senior in academic standing, be in their second year at the current institution, and have at least a 3.4 cumulative grade point average. In addition, each student-athlete must have played a minimum of 75-percent of contests throughout the season and collected conference or national honors on the field. 
 
Mangione had a historic senior campaign, scoring 10 goals and notching four assists adding to his 78 career points which ranks 16th in program history. The team captain’s 31 career goals ranks 13th all-time. 
 
The Maryland native has collected numerous awards this season, highlighted by being named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and placed on All-Big Ten First Team. Mangione has also garnered United Soccer Coaches All-Region First Team and College Sports Communicators Academic All-District along with earning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week twice this season. 
 
Mangione is just the second player in program history to be named a Scholar American twice. Former Nittany Lion Jason Yeisley was placed on the second team in 2007 and the first team in 2009.
