Comets Face Outlaws in Back-To-Back

Comets Crash Wave 10-4 Saturday Night

December 15, 2023 – Major Arena Soccer League (MASL)Kansas City Comets News Release

The Kansas City Comets (3-0-0) and Texas Outlaws (1-1-1) will meet twice this weekend in the Comets’ first inter-conference showdown of the season. Game 1 is on Saturday in Texas while Game 2 will be at Cable Dahmer Arena on Sunday.

The Comets sit at the top of the Eastern Conference standings with three regulation wins. They are coming from their first away win of the season, beating the Harrisburg Heat 7-3.

After going down in the first quarter, the first time the Comets trailed all season, they responded quickly and never let up. Zach Reget tallied three goals and an assist as Nicolau Neto picked up his third straight win.

Reget enters Week 4 as the league leader in goals with seven. Neto is the league’s leader in saves with 43 and save percentage, stopping 84% of shots faced.

The Comets also showed their defiant special teams defense in last week’s away win. They killed both penalties they faced. That defense will not be at full strength this weekend amid injury concerns with Chad Vandegriffe (right calf tightness) questionable and Berto Palmer (right knee strain) doubtful.

This weekend will be the Comets and Outlaws’ third and fourth all-time meetings. The Comets won the inaugural battle in December 2019 by a final of 5-4, but the Outlaws won the second-ever meeting last year 5-3. Sunday’s contest will be the Outlaws’ first time in Cable Dahmer Arena.

The Outlaws enter the weekend slate against the Comets free from injury concerns and eager to return to the win column after back-to-back losses. They opened the season with a 9-5 come-from-behind win over the Baltimore Blast but lost to the Chihuahua Savage 12-4 before an overtime loss to the Dallas Sidekicks 8-7 last week.

Under the tutelage of indoor soccer legend Tatu, the Outlaws have relied offensively on Sebastian Mendez and Luiz Morales, who have combined for 15 points from 11 goals and four assists. Texas has also acquired veteran target Vini Dantas, who has scored once in the first three games.

The Outlaws brought more experience into their defense with the acquisitions of MASL veterans such as Mike Jones and Uzi Tayou. Tayou has played in two games this season while Jones has not appeared in the first three games.
