No. 7 Men's Soccer Falls to No. 2 Penn State in B1G Quarterfinals


UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No. 7-seeded Rutgers men’s soccer team (5-8-3, 3-4-1 B1G) dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 2 Penn State (10-3-4, 4-2-2 B1G) in the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals on Friday night.  

Rutgers played solid defense to start off the contest, fending off multiple chances from Penn State. Just before the half however, the Nittany Lions got on the board with a score to take the 1-0 edge. 

Then PSU tacked on two more goals in the second half to take the 3-nil lead. In the 88th minute the Scarlet Knights broke through, as Nick Collins found the back of the net for the first score of his collegiate career.

Game Notes  

  • Collins’ goal is the first of his season in his 12th start. With an assist earlier in the season against Michigan State (Oct. 17) the Big Ten All-Freshman Team selection now has three points this season.  
  • Ciaran Dalton made three saves against Penn State. He leads the goalkeeper unit with 53 total saves and has made 3+ stops in 11 outings this fall.  
  • Jackson Temple paced the team with three shots against the Nittany Lions, including one shot on goal.  
  • Despite trailing for most of the contest, Rutgers came back to take the edge in shots, 18-17, and shots on goal, 8-7. The Scarlet Knights also owned the advantage in corners, 5-4.  
  • All five freshmen made their Big Ten Tournament debut on Friday night. Collins, Devon Stopek and Erick Ruiz all started the game on the back line while Francesco Di Ponzio and Luciano Sanchez entered off the bench. The group of five rookies have collectively played 3,394 minutes on the pitch and combined for 36 starts.   
  • Matthew Acosta, Collins and Ciaran Dalton played all 90 minutes against PSU.
