Cats Take Down Sun Devils in Front of Record-Breaking Crowd

TUCSON – Arizona soccer completed its 2023 season with a home win over Arizona State, 2-1, in front of a record-breaking crowd of 1,389 on Friday. The Wildcats end the season with a 6-8-5 (3-6-2 Pac-12) record while the Sun Devils move to 10-6-4 (5-5-1 Pac-12).

Arizona took a 1-0 lead in the 47th minute when Jasmine Young launched the ball from outside the box to Sami Baytosh, who was waiting inside the box on the left side of the goal. Baytosh sent a header to Dallin, who put the ball in the direction of the net for Gianna Christiansen to knock in.

The Wildcats increased their lead in the 54th minute when Arizona State committed a foul in the area, setting up the Arizona penalty kick. Dallin took the kick and put it over the right shoulder of Arizona State’s Pauline Nelles.

Arizona took a couple of shots early with Christiansen and Young getting looks before the 10th minute, but neither team got much going offensively in the first half.

Baytosh got the ball just outside the Sun Devils’ goal in the 40th minute and took a shot that Nelles was able to get hand on but not fully clear. Christiansen was moving to try and put the rebound in the goal when the Arizona State defenders got there to clear the ball.

The Wildcats threatened again a few minutes later with shots by Christiansen and Dallin, but the teams entered halftime scoreless.

In the 56th minute the Sun Devils got on the board when a shot by Gabi Rennie was bobbled around and knocked in to the goal by the Arizona defense.

Hope Hisey concluded the night with five saves to make her career total and the program record 366.
