The agent of Mohammed Kudus has revealed an agreement was reached for the forward to join Chelsea this summer, only for the Blues to offer a ‘ridiculous’ transfer fee that scuppered the deal.

Kudus was a player in demand during the recent transfer window after starring for Ajax last term, scoring 11 goals and providing four assists in the Eredivisie.

Chelsea, Arsenal and PSG were all linked with the forward, and the west London club looked to have moved into pole position for his signature at one stage.

Kudus’ agent Jen Mendelewitsch has revealed this was the case and the move was edging closer before Chelsea offered just £17million for the attacker, and then refused to improve their bid. The Ghanaian star eventually joined West Ham in a deal worth £38m.

‘We reached an agreement with Chelsea, we agreed the contract with Chelsea but the deal was not done,’ Mendelewitsch explained to RMC Sport.

‘He talked with the coach but in the end it didn’t happen because Chelsea made a ridiculous offer to Ajax.

‘There was no counter offer. Chelsea did this with lots of players this summer, making very low offers to clubs knowing that they would not be accepted.’

Mendelewitsch’s claim suggests Chelsea were not fully convinced about signing Kudus, and she believes they were more concerned with getting a deal over the line for one of their other key targets instead.

‘The truth is that they were completely focused on the transfer of (Moises) Caicedo which took up all their energy,’ he added.

Chelsea completed a deal for Caicedo on the eve of the season in one of the biggest transfer stories of the summer.
