Ferdinand baffled by Ten Hag selection and hints four Man Utd stars won’t be happy with decision

Rio Ferdinand former Manchester United player gives an interview to BT Sport ahead of the Premier League match Manchester City vs Liverpool at Etihad Stadium

Manchester United have struggled to find much form of late and Rio Ferdinand was left baffled by one of Erik ten Hag’s decisions against West Ham.

Ten Hag’s side have now lost back-to-back Premier League matches and Liverpool are only one point behind, with United having a game in hand.

Said Benrahma’s first half strike was enough to give West Ham all three points as Man Utd struggled to find a way back into the match.

Wout Weghorst started the evening as a number 10 playing behind Marcus Rashford, but Ferdinand wasn’t a fan of the decision.

“I just think Man Utd’s No 10, a top team’s No 10 doesn’t look like a Weghorst in my eyes. The attributes that he’s got,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.

“Let’s look at it another way, if I’m Sancho, Bruno, Garnacho, Martial and I’m sitting there watching him line-up as a No 10 in front of me, the No 10 shirt means something else. It’s a player that can create, has got guile, can get between the lines and get on the half turn and bring other people into play in that sense and get goals.

“He doesn’t offer all those things I’ve just said there… I think his best piece of play today was a tackle in his own box. That’s a no.10, that’s not what no.10s are known for doing.”

Weghorst is yet to hit the back of the net in the Premier League and he has split plenty of fans opinions since signing on loan in January.

His work rate off the ball has made him a popular player in the eyes of Ten Hag, but his quality has often been lacking.

Fellow BT pundit Peter Crouch backed up Ferdinand’s thoughts and was surprised by Ten Hag’s tactics.

“Weghorst is a good player but I just can’t get my head round what he gives in that position,” he said.

“I think if you play Weghorst you’ve got to play him high up. Then Rashford and Sancho can bounce balls off him.

“You can play one touch and then he’s in the box for any kind of crosses. If you play that way you’re not going to get the best out of him.”

Across all competitions, the Dutch forward has scored two goals in 27 appearances. With his loan deal set to expire at the end of the campaign, it would be a surprise if they decide to sign him permanently.

However, given Man Utd’s lack of forward options, Ten Hag doesn’t have much choice but to stick with the 30-year-old for the rest of the season.

Ten Hag’s side have four games remaining in the Premier League with games to come against Wolves, Bournemouth, Chelsea and…
