Tottenham caretaker manager Ryan Mason wants to see an “angry team” when Spurs face Liverpool in a crucial match at the weekend.
Mason’s side travel to Anfield on Sunday with both Tottenham and Liverpool needing a win to keep their hopes of Champions League football next season alive.
Tottenham drew 2-2 with Manchester United on Thursday night, leaving them six points behind Erik ten Hag’s side, who occupy the fourth and final Champions League spot.
Man Utd also have two games in hand on Spurs while seventh-placed Liverpool are one point behind fifth-placed Tottenham with one game in hand.
Despite just one win in six Premier League matches, Mason is backing his side to “hurt” other teams with their quality.
Mason told reporters on Friday: “We focus on ourselves and feel confident that we can hurt other teams when we have the ball.
“We have quality players but we also have to be a team and be humble together.
“And obviously, we have to respect the opposition.
“I’ve played there [Anfield], I know what it’s like. Playing football and coaching is special wherever I go. The biggest pride I have is representing this football club, it’s not about going up against anyone else.”
Son revealed Tottenham were “angry” at half-time in their draw against Manchester United and Mason wants his side to channel that aggression for the rest of the season.
Mason added: “Naturally when you have a result like last Sunday [the 6-1 defeat at Newcastle] there should be anger.
“I wanted to see an angry team, I said that in the pre-match conference.
“I’m sure everyone was angry with how the weekend went and that was a natural reaction to feel those emotions.
“We had to take that into the game with a clear head as well.”
On the bond in the squad, Mason continued: “In football, negativity can spread very quickly but at the same time so can positivity, if you create the right feeling.
“That can accelerate a process so hopefully we can continue with what we saw in the second half [against Manchester United].
“We were together and had belief in what we were doing.”
Harry Kane produced a good performance against Man Utd and Mason has hailed the Tottenham striker.
Mason said of Kane: “He was outstanding. This country probably doesn’t appreciate how good he is. From a footballer point of view, he is incredible.
