Former Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann does not think the club’s summer rebuild will mean immediate results on the pitch.
Jurgen Klopp is expected to invest heavily at the end of the season after what has been a disappointing campaign.
Knocked out in the early rounds of the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Champions League, the Reds are now fighting to finish inside the top four, which seems very unlikely at this stage.
They have given themselves a fighting chance with three wins in a row, but Klopp’s side still trail fourth-placed Manchester United by six points having played two games more.
Liverpool will need to be perfect between now and the end of the season, while United or Newcastle – who are third – slip up.
With Europa League football on the horizon, Klopp may not be able to land his top summer targets.
The Merseyside club have already withdrawn from the race to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham over fears he will obliterate their summer budget.
With Bellingham off the table, the Reds are pursuing Chelsea’s Mason Mount and Conor Gallagher, Brighton’s Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister, and West Ham’s Declan Rice.
Liverpool are expected to sign at least two new midfielders in the summer transfer window. Even with a huge overhaul, the club’s former midfielder Hamann does not see this making them title contenders right away.
“I don’t expect Liverpool to hit the ground running next season,” Hamann told AceOdds.com.
“It won’t be straightforward if people think, oh, we’ll bring Mount or maybe Rice, or bring this player in, [Bayern Munich’s Ryan] Gravenberch.
“When we’ve got these players, when these players come into a settled side, it takes time to adapt.
“If you’ve got, I don’t know, they probably need £200/£250 million in the summer, and I’m not even sure that Klopp will get that amount of money.
“Now, if you were to get it, you’ve got to set half the money away apart for Jude Bellingham.
“As I said, they probably need five or six players in the summer. So to spend half the money, even more of the budget, on one player, I don’t think is a wise move.
“He’s a very talented player. I think he’s got a long way to go.
“I think it was right (not pursuing Bellingham). The only question is where did all that talk come from that Liverpool wants him or is in for him or saved the money last season? I’m not sure that it’s ever been the case.
