Wanderers Open Canadian Championship Run Wednesday

The Halifax Wanderers Football Club begin their journey in the Canadian Championship when they host Atlético Ottawa at York Lions Stadium on Wednesday night.

It’s the second straight match between the two sides after a 1-1 draw on April 15 at TD Place in Ottawa. Zachary Fernandez scored for Halifax.


Following the match, Wanderers defenders Daniel Nimick and Riley Ferrazzo and midfielder Lorenzo Callegari were named to the first CPL Team of the Week in 2023. All three were making both their Wanderers and CPL debuts.

That was part of 10 Halifax players that were making their debuts in the match.

The winner between Halifax and Ottawa advances to face Forge FC in the quarter-finals. Forge defeated FC Laval 3-0 on Tuesday night.

Wanderers captain Andre Rampersad is closing in on his 100th appearance for the club. The 28-year-old midfielder is in line to play in his 99th match across all competitions should he play today.

Following today’s match, the Wanderers head to Hamilton to close out a season-opening road trip on Saturday, April 22, against Forge FC.

The home opener in Halifax is on Saturday, April 29, against Vancouver FC.

Captains:

Andre Rampersad retains the captain’s armband for the 2023 campaign. This is Rampersad’s fourth season as team captain. Ryan James and Mohamed Omar are the Wanderers’ assistant captains.

Coaches:

2023 is the first season with Patrice Gheisar as the Halifax Wanderers’ Head Coach. Gheisar was hired in late 2022 after leading Vaughan Azzurri in League1 Ontario to an undefeated season and league championship. Joining Gheisar is assistant coach Jorden Feliciano, who was Gheisar’s assistant coach at Vaughan. Jed Davies is another new face in 2023 who is also an assistant coach. Davies’ experience in professional football includes stops with USL teams Ottawa Fury and Miami FC, where he served as an assistant coach. Most recently, he served as head of player and coach development for Futuro Academy in Ottawa, ON. Jan-Michael Williams returns as the Wanderers goalkeeper coach.
