Liverpool to return for sensational midfield transfer next season after pausing interest for summer

Jude Bellingham, Borussia Dortmund, April 2023

Liverpool dropped out of the race for Jude Bellingham recently, but reports suggests they may return at the end of next season, if he stays at Borussia Dortmund.

Interest in Bellingham from a number of sources makes a lot of sense. Not many 19 years olds are given the privilege of captaining a regular Champions League outfit.

Bellingham has worn Dortmund’s armband on occasion, during a season in which he’s scored 10 goals and provided seven assists in all competitions. He’s also made 24 England appearances – yet another example of the 19-year-old being a special talent.

Liverpool, Manchester City and Real Madrid are the three sides who have been most heavily linked with the snare.

The Reds were reported to have dropped out earlier in the week. Indeed, they decided their outlay this summer should be on a number of players, in order to bring the quality of the squad as a whole up, rather than on one star.

That’s allowed City to take pole position, as a £130million transfer – what Dortmund will ask for in order to sell Bellingham – would see Real forced into selling some assets first, while the Citizens could apparently make the snare without doing so.

However, there’s no guarantee Bellingham will be going anywhere. A report has suggested he’d sooner stay at Dortmund another season than ‘be pushed towards a move that’s absolutely not right for him’.

Football Insider reiterates the prospect he could remain in Germany another season, which offers Liverpool a route back in. That report mentions a contract offer from his current side, which the midfielder ‘has not ruled out signing’.

If he is to stay, Liverpool are apparently ‘prepared to re-enter the race for him next summer’. That’s as they could be in a much better position, having potentially added some quality players to the mix and secured Champions League football.

If they are to finish in the Champions League spots, they would be ‘less concerned about finances’ and also ‘in a stronger negotiating position to lure Bellingham to Anfield’.

As such, while the saga appeared to have been coming to a conclusion this summer, it might be extended for another year, sustaining the battle for some time.

A lot can change in a year, so while City might be in the lead this summer, if Bellingham decides that move isn’t for him, there could be a few sides who become viable options for next summer, Liverpool included.
