Ben Chilwell has signed a two-year contract extension which will keep him at Chelsea until the summer of 2027, the Premier League club have confirmed.
Chilwell, a £50million signing from Leicester during Frank Lampard’s first spell in charge in 2020, has been linked with a number of Premier League rivals after an injury-plagued couple of seasons, but the 26-year-old said he wanted to remain at Chelsea for the long-term.
“I feel very settled at Chelsea and have really enjoyed my time on the pitch here so I’m very pleased the club want me to be part of the project long-term, and am very happy to sign this extension to my contract,” the 18-cap England defender said.
“We are working hard for success and I will do my best to bring more smiles to the faces of the fans who have made me feel so welcome.”
Chilwell was part of the Chelsea squad that won the Champions League in 2021 but a ruptured cruciate knee ligament ruined his 2021-22 season and he has also missed three months of this campaign – including the World Cup – with a hamstring injury.
Chilwell has made 80 appearances for Chelsea, scoring nine goals.
Meanwhile, Arsenal’s Premier League match at home to Chelsea has been pushed back three days after the Metropolitan Police “revised its position”.
The Gunners are fighting it out with reigning champions Manchester City for the title and currently boast a six-point cushion, although Pep Guardiola’s side have a game in hand.
The teams also meet at the Etihad Stadium on April 26 – a match that Arsenal were set to follow with an all-London clash against Chelsea on April 29.
But the Premier League has announced that the fixture is being switched from its Saturday night kick-off to the evening of Tuesday, May 2 due to the local police’s request.
A league statement read: “The initial scheduling of this match was approved at a Safety Advisory Group (SAG) meeting in February.
“However, the Metropolitan Police has now revised its position regarding the kick-off time and requested a further SAG meeting which determined the match had to be rescheduled.
“We regret the need to move this fixture at late notice and the impact this will have on supporters. The game will remain live on Sky Sports.”
Arsenal expressed their frustration with the decision to move the match from a Saturday evening kick-off to a Tuesday night.
