Ian Wright has revealed the three positions he thinks Manchester United must strengthen.

In manager Erik ten Hag’s first season in charge, the Red Devils currently lie fifth, level on points with Newcastle and Tottenham in third and fourth, having played two games fewer than Spurs.

Ten Hag has also guided United to League Cup glory, the semi-finals of the FA Cup, and the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

The Dutchman may well secure three trophies this campaign, with pundit and Arsenal legend Wright insisting the 53-year-old has done enough to deserve significant financial backing in the summer transfer window. 

And Wright claimed on his Wrighty’s House podcast that he will reserve full judgement on Ten Hag until he has been able to strengthen in three key positions.

He said: ‘That man (Ten Hag) has got to get everything he needs to try and do his job well and play the football he wants to play. For what he’s done at Manchester United this season, he deserves that.

‘I still don’t think the right-hand side of the team is working right now. You’ve got (Jadon) Sancho and Antony who are capable of doing unbelievable stuff. Antony had so many options (at Ajax) – he could cut in and target the No 9 or there would be a player overlapping him. He had so many different options to get the best out of him.

‘The same for Sancho at Borussia Dortmund. You have two unbelievable players who can do loads of great stuff but they’ve not been put into a system where they can thrive. I can’t wait for Erik ten Hag to get the right-back he wants and the No 9 he wants. 

‘The goalkeeper situation – you listen to the Jacob Murphy interview and you don’t often hear stuff like that, it was brilliant to hear. At some stage something needs to be done about the goalkeeper…
