Carragher names ‘special’ Newcastle star who would be ‘absolutely fantastic’ at Man Utd

Jamie Carragher thinks Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak would be “absolutely fantastic” for Man Utd with the Red Devils on the lookout for a new centre-forward.

The Red Devils are hoping to take some of the goalscoring burden away from Marcus Rashford – who has scored 27 goals in all competitions this season – with the club still looking for a permanent replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo left the club at the end of November last year, following a controversial interview with Piers Morgan, and Man Utd brought in Wout Weghorst on loan from Burnley until the end of the season from Championship side Burnley.

But Weghorst – who has yet to score a Premier League goal – is unlikely to be part of Erik ten Hag’s long-term plans, while injury-prone Anthony Martial also faces an uncertain future at the club.

Man Utd are having a solid season under Ten Hag, despite slipping out the top four over the weekend, with the Red Devils winning the Carabao Cup and into the latter stages of both the FA Cup and Europa League.

Isak has scored six goals in 11 Premier League matches for Newcastle since swapping Real Sociedad for the Magpies in a £60m move in the summer transfer window.

And, despite suffering with injuries, Carragher thinks the Sweden international would solve Man United’s needs in attack.

Speaking of Isak, Carragher said on Sky Sports: “I love him, I love watching him play.

“I mean, Manchester United need a centre-forward, you look at him and I think he would be absolutely fantastic for Man United.

“They could have got him at the start of the season. When I first saw him at Anfield, I think it was his first appearance, he looked outstanding and eclectic.

“Anybody who tells you that centre-forward play is all about scoring goals is just living in a dream world. Centre-forwards also have to be able to press in the modern game and he can do that.

“They have to press. They have to have pace. Energy, score goals and be involved in the build-up play.

“I just love the energy and aggression he’s got. Honestly, I think he’s absolutely fantastic. I think Newcastle have a special, special centre-forward.”

Man Utd host Brentford as Newcastle travel to West Ham on Wednesday night in a crucial round of fixtures with the fifth-placed Red Devils level on 50 points with the third-placed Geordies.
