Rashford explains Van Gaal ‘non-negotiable’ that saw him fined every week at Man Utd

Marcus Rashford has recalled the unreasonable disciplinary measures implemented by Louis van Gaal at Manchester United that saw him get fined every week.

Rashford made his United debut under Van Gaal, scoring twice in a 5-1 win over FC Midtjylland in 2016 as an 18-year-old.

The Dutch boss was keen to ensure Rashfrod remained grounded under his watch, insisting he completed his college work before coming to training.

But that stipulation meant Rashford could do little to avoid being fined every Thursday, with little leeway allowed for the teenager.

“I always remember Thursdays,” Rashford told Sky Sports. “I used to get fined every Thursday, [but] it was completely out of my control but this is the type of person that Van Gaal was.

“He used to tell me I have to finish my college work, it’s non-negotiable, but I also can’t be late for training, it’s non-negotiable. I had 12 minutes to get here [to the training ground] from college.”

Van Gaal left United at the end of Rashford’s debut campaign having guided the club to the FA Cup, but he’s still held in high regard by Rashford and he majority of his teammates from that period.

When the 71-year-old was diagnosed with prostate cancer, Rashford tweeted: ‘Earned my debut from LVG. Will forever be indebted. You can fight this. We are all behind you.’

Rashford was also disciplined by new boss Erik ten Hag earlier this season having missed a team meeting.

The striker was dropped from the starting lineup against Wolves, but came off the bench to score the only goal of the game.

Speaking after the 1-0 win, Luke Shaw was asked about Ten Hag’s authoritative approach following the decision to drop their in-form striker.

He said:”People can’t do whatever they want, maybe that has been the problem in the past – people getting away with silly little things.”

Rashford has thrived under Ten Hag this season and has been in stunning goalscoring form, already surpassing his previous best season, netting 25 from 38 games in all competitions.
