Todd Boehly is reportedly interested in making Neymar a Chelsea player, and has apparently been in Paris to discuss the conditions of a potential deal.
Neymar has been one of the world’s best talents for the majority of his career. His quality was clear while he was playing for Santos, leading to a huge move to Barcelona.
While playing for the European giants, the Brazilian was directly involved in a mesmerising 181 goals in 186 games. That led to a near £200million transfer to Paris Saint-Germain, where he has played for coming up to six seasons.
He averages a goal or assist better than once a game, with the forward having been directly involved in 193 goals in 172 games.
PSG have also failed to win Ligue 1 on just one occasion since Neymar has been at the club. As such, it would seem that they’d be keen on keeping the 31-year-old around for the rest of his career.
However, reports of a ‘fallout’ at the club have surfaced recently, which apparently means Neymar wants to leave.
Finding a club that would be able to pay for a player whose last transfer was around £200million and has a contract until 2025 would seem tough.
However, if the last year or so is anything to go by, Chelsea would be happy to splash an outrageous sum on him, and it seems they are.
Indeed, Le Parisien reports the Blues are ‘interested in making a move’ for Neymar. So much so that owner Boehly ‘travelled to Paris on Tuesday to talk about the conditions of a potential deal’.
Clearly, it won’t be a deal that comes cheap. However, the opportunity to sign a player of Neymar’s quality, even over the age of 30, is not one that comes around all too often.
Judging by the spend of more than £500million since Boehly took charge, whether a deal is worth it or not, it’s probably one Chelsea will pursue.
Who can tell if it is worth it until he gets to the club. You can’t argue with 369 goals for club and country in 616 games, so there’s obviously a chance he’d be a fantastic goalscoring asset.
On the other hand, the Blues currently have nine players that are classed as attackers, with another handful that can play in the forward line.
As such, whether it’s a signing that is needed could be argued. It would certainly be cool to see Neymar lighting up the Premier League for a couple of seasons, though.
