Besiktas sporting director Ceyhun Kazanci has been left baffled by Dele Alli’s form since he joined the Turkish side on loan in the summer from Everton.
It has been a shame to see how Alli’s career has gone down the drain in recent seasons.
The Englishman was legitimately one of the Premier League’s best young players for a couple of years after he joined Tottenham from MK Dons.
But Jose Mourinho was unable to get the best out of Alli as the player appeared to lose his love for football.
It was thought a couple of years ago that Alli is capable of eventually going on to play for the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid.
But he has gone the other way as last year he left Tottenham to sign for Everton on an initial free transfer.
This was a performance-based deal as the Toffees could have ended up paying up to £40m for the midfielder had the transfer worked out.
His decline continued in an Everton shirt though as he failed to score in his 13 appearances.
Everton could not get rid of Alli quickly enough as he joined Super Lig outfit Besiktas on loan in the summer.
This could have been the fresh start Alli needed as he was afforded the opportunity to rebuild his career away from the limelight.
Alli has floundered though as his time in Turkey has largely been inconsequential with him scoring just twice in eight appearances.
Now Kazanci has admitted that there is no answer for Alli’s issues because he is “working very hard”.
“No-one can answer whether Dele Alli can do it right now,” Kazanci told TRT Spor.
“He is working very hard. He is a player who reached €100million (£87m) three years ago. He had a fall.”
He added: “Dele Alli is working intensively. We had intense talks with him before we signed him.
“Gunes [Besiktas’ manager] is famous for returning many players whose careers have been on the decline. We hope that he will be better in the second half of the season.”
Earlier this year, Besiktas boss Senol Gunes suggested that Alli has been performing “below expectations”.
“I couldn’t affect the players,” said Gunes earlier in the season.
“Now I can easily touch them but we haven’t touched Dele Alli yet. Let’s not discuss Dele Alli as a player but he is below expectations in terms of efficiency.”
Unlike Alli, Tammy Abraham has thrived playing in Europe since his transfer from AS Roma to Chelsea last year.
