North Carolina Falls to UCLA in Overtime in NCAA College Cup Final

CARY, N.C. (theACC.com) – Second-seeded North Carolina’s quest for a 23rd national collegiate title in women’s soccer fell just short Monday, as the Tar Heels fell in overtime to top-seeded UCLA 3-2 in the national championship game.  The Tar Heels closed the season with a 20-5-1 overall record.

Holding a lead for much of the contest, the Bruins found an equalizer with just 17 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. UCLA scored its game winner in the second period of overtime to claim the national title.

Junior Avery Patterson scored both of North Carolina’s goals, as two second-half headers found the back of the net. The goals were her 12th and 13th of the season.

Patterson was joined by teammates Tori Hansen and Ally Sentnor on the All-Tournament Team. Also on the All-Tournament Team were Florida State’s Jody Brown and Leilanni Nesbeth.

The ACC has had a team in the Women’s College Cup in 41 of the past 42 NCAA Tournaments and in each of the past 16 years. The ACC has 57 appearances in the College Cup – the most of any conference (the next closest conference is the Pac-12 with 28 appearances). Current membership combines for 69 appearances.
