Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni lamented his side’s three disallowed offside goals in Tuesday’s shock 2-1 World Cup loss to Saudi Arabia.
Los Albiceleste suffered the upset defeat in their World Cup opener despite Lionel Messi putting them ahead in the 10th minute from the penalty spot.
Saleh Al Shehri leveled the game shortly after the break, with Salem Al Dawsari firing in a fine winner in the 53rd minute.
But Argentina were constantly caught offside in the first half when they had the chance to double their lead, with three goals disallowed for accurate offside decisions.
“The reasons were millimetric,” Scaloni told reporters. “The offsides, they have a high defensive line, we knew that any goal situation would go for or against us.
“In this case, the semi-automatic offside technology took a goal away from us. That’s the way it is, we congratulate our rivals.
“It’s hard to take. We could have been 2-0 up, but in two sudden moments, the game changed.”
The loss leaves Argentina in a delicate position in Group C, with a clash against Mexico next up on Saturday, before tackling Poland in their final group game. Mexico and Poland drew 0-0 on Tuesday.
“Today is a sad day but as we always say, head up and carry on,” Scaloni said.
“We still think the same way. Before the game we came as favourites, but in a World Cup these things can happen. You have to work on the aspects that did not go well.”
Scaloni added that the medical report indicated all his players had go through the game unscathed.
