Cristiano Ronaldo’s Man United exit ‘comes as no surprise’ given he ‘clearly breached his contract’ in explosive interview criticising club, claims British law firm – while outcome ‘voids need for a protracted and potentially embarrassing appeal process’

Cristiano Ronaldo‘s sudden Manchester United departure ‘comes as no surprise’ because his bombshell interview criticising the club was a ‘clear breach of contract’, according to a British law firm.

The veteran forward stunned the footballing world with an explosive interview with TV presenter Piers Morgan, in which he openly criticised the club, the manager and his own-team mates – with United then announcing his exit on Tuesday evening.

Ronaldo and the club have now separated by mutual consent, an outcome which ‘voids the need for a protracted and potentially embarrassing appeal process’, a representative of Mishcon de Reya said.

The company’s Head of Sport Simon Leaf said: ‘Given the explosive nature of the allegations made against Manchester United, its Directors and Owners by Ronaldo, and equally, the clear breach of contract by Ronaldo that would have potentially entitled Manchester United to terminate Ronaldo’s contract for ‘gross misconduct’, this announcement comes as no surprise to anyone.

‘From a legal perspective, these kind of early termination arrangements have become increasingly popular in recent years with a number of high-profile players leaving clubs in this way.

‘In this case, it avoids the need for a protracted and potentially embarrassing appeal process that may have been triggered had United terminated the contract for breach.’
