Club Statement from Energy FC

November 18, 2022 – United Soccer League Championship (USL)OKC Energy FC News Release

In recent months, the USL informed Oklahoma City Energy FC of its intention to have all USL Championship clubs playing on home fields of at least 110 x 70 yards, starting in 2023, with no exceptions, as part of its broader efforts to improve the match experience for players and fans.

Knowing that the field at Taft Stadium would not meet the minimum size requirement, Energy FC and the League resumed discussions about alternative solutions for the club’s home until the completion of the MAPS 4 multipurpose stadium, currently slated for 2026. Unfortunately, no venue in the Oklahoma City metro area meets the USL Championship’s requirements for field dimensions, stadium capacity and necessary team amenities. Without a viable option, Energy FC cannot compete on the field.

In past years, the USL allowed Oklahoma City Energy FC to play at Taft Stadium as an exception to this standard. As a longtime tenant, Energy FC are understanding of OKCPS’ multiple uses for the venue and their desire to support the thousands of students who utilize it for a variety of extracurricular activities. OKCPS has been a tremendous partner.

We understand the disappointment of our supporters, partners and community. We are grateful for your support throughout this process and ask for your short-term patience as we prepare and build for long-term growth.

Energy FC will continue to operate as a franchised USL Championship organization and explore solutions while looking forward to construction of the MAPS 4 multipurpose stadium – our future home.

Q&A

When will Energy FC return to play?

We will continue to explore solutions as we look forward to the opening of the MAPS 4 multipurpose stadium, currently scheduled for completion in 2026. The organization owes it to our fans and community to ensure that this return is done properly and sets up the club for sustained success on and off the field for many, many seasons to come.

Is Energy FC still considered part of the USL?

Energy FC will continue to operate as a franchised USL Championship organization, with plans to return to the league when the team resumes play. This additional time away from competition will provide the club with critical opportunities to invest in infrastructure, staffing, player acquisition, partnership structuring and community development.
