Cristiano Ronaldo has been told that he has “let himself down” this season as his petulance at Man Utd has given people a “glimpse” at his “real character”.
Ronaldo’s actions over the past couple of months have dominated Erik ten Hag’s start to life as United manager.
He was missing for much of pre-season but he returned to the fold after he was unable to secure himself a move elsewhere.
The 37-year-old has not taken kindly to not starting for United this season. Last month, he stormed off down the touchline after he refused to come on as a substitute against Tottenham Hotspur.
Ten Hag briefly punished the forward as he was made to train alone and was not considered for selection as they drew against Chelsea.
Ronaldo has now returned to the fold. It looks to be happy families at United at the moment but it will likely not be long before the veteran kicks off again, especially if he remains at the club beyond January.
Wayne Rooney suggested on Friday that Ronaldo’s actions this season are “not acceptable”.
“I just think the things he has done from the start of the season, it is not acceptable for Manchester United. I’ve seen Roy Keane defending him. Roy wouldn’t accept that. Roy wouldn’t accept that at all,” Rooney said on talkSPORT.
Ex-Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan is in agreement with Rooney.
He does not think that Ronaldo would have gotten away with this petulance if Sir Alex Ferguson was still at the club.
“I think that he needed to be a self-starter in terms of being an example and a role model, he’s in a club where Man United was in flux. It was in disarray for several years with a lack of standards ” Jordan told talkSPORT.
“He didn’t get a choice about standards when he played for Sir Alex Ferguson the first time round. He didn’t get much of a choice playing for Real Madrid about what standards he would and wouldn’t deploy.
“But he did get a choice at Manchester United [second spell] because the place was in disarray and there weren’t any leaders in there.
“So what we might have seen is a real glimpse into the character of Cristiano Ronaldo.”
Jordan went onto say that he has been “disappointed with Ronaldo”.
“He’s let himself down and he’s let down the image he wanted to create in other people’s minds,” Jordan added.
