COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State (10-3-5) fell 2-1 to Rutgers (9-4-6) Wednesday in the 2022 Big Ten Tournament Semifinals in Piscataway, New Jersey.

The Scarlet Knights advance to play in the championship game Sunday. Ohio State now waits for the NCAA Tournament selection show Nov. 14.

How it Happened

The Scarlet Knights took the early lead in the 25th minute on a goal by Jackson Temple with assists from Chris Tiao and Ola Maeland. The goal was headed to the ground, bounced, hit the top right corner of the goalpost and then snuck in for the score.

Xavier Green scored the equalizer for the Buckeyes from right out front off a pass from Luciano Pechota in the 51st minute.

The momentum shifted back to the Scarlet Knights when Tiao scored his first goal of the year in the 61st to regain the lead at 2-1.

  • Ohio State entered the 2022 Big Ten Tournament as the No. 3 seed. The Buckeyes are 21-27-2 all-time in the league tournament, including a 4-5 record as the No. 3 seed.
  • The Buckeyes are 2-1 in league tournament play vs. the Scarlet Knights. Ohio State defeated Rutgers 4-0 in 2015 and 1-0 in 2019 in BTT competition. The Buckeyes are 11-23-2 away from Columbus in conference tournament play.
  • Ohio State entered postseason competition at 9-2-5 overall, the most wins since the 2015 team posted a 13-7-3 overall record. The Buckeyes (10-3-5) have won 10 or more games in a season 20 times in program history.
  • The Big Ten Conference announced its 2022 Award winners Nov. 4. Ohio State was well represented. Junior Laurence Wootton (Midfielder of the Year) and senior Keagan McLaughlin (Goalkeeper of the Year) also garnered First Team All-Big Ten honors. Senior Xavier Green and sophomore Anthony Samways were named Second Team All-Big Ten by the league coaches. Rookies Tanner Creech and Luciano Pechota (unanimous) earned spots on the All-Freshman team while senior Brayden Durbin was named Ohio State’s Sportsmanship Award honoree.
