Pep Hails Grealish, Declares Phillips ‘Ready’ for World Cup Selection

Pep Hails Grealish, Declares Phillips 'Ready' for World Cup Selection

Jack Grealish produced a timely reminder of his quality ahead of Thursday’s England World Cup squad announcement with a “magnificent” performance, according to Pep Guardiola.

Manchester City triumphed 2-0 over Chelsea in Wednesday’s League Cup clash, with Grealish starring in the absence of Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden.

Grealish, who is expected to be part of Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad, had six shots including three on target, warranting praise from his manager.

“Jack was magnificent,” Guardiola told reporters. “He played really well. I want Jack to have responsibility when we play with Kevin or Phil.

“When he gets the ball and attacks the backline, his intention is always to pass the ball.

“All the time we tell him to go to score a goal. He has the body language to pass the ball, but tonight his body language was ‘I am going to score a goal’.

“He didnt score, but one day he will do it. Jack is playing really good.”

Another City midfielder in contention for England selection is Kalvin Phillips who returned from a shoulder injury for the first time since September, coming on as a 50th minute substitute.

“There’s a lot of days to go until the first game. He’s ready,” Guardiola said about Phillips’ World Cup availability.

Phillips added: “I’ve not so much (spoken) with Gareth, Ive spoke with the staff and physios. Anything can happen. I dont want to miss it. But with the amount of game time Ive had theres always that doubt.

“My injuries and stuff, Ive not really been playing 100 per cent with my shoulder but Ive got that sorted now so I’m optimistic and its put me in good stead.”
