Clarke’s Late Goal Sends Men’s Soccer Past VCU, 1-0

NC State

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Akeim Clarke’s header in the 82nd minute gave the University of North Carolina men’s soccer team a 1-0 win over Virginia Commonwealth on Tuesday night at Dorrance Field.

Following their second straight win, the Tar Heels improve to 6-3-2 (2-2-1) on the year while the Rams drop to 1-6-5.

The home team controlled possession from the first whistle, creating several scoring opportunities throughout the first 45 minutes of play. Carolina had nine shots before the break, including four on target, marking the most it has recorded during an opening frame this season.

Maintaining its lock down on defense, UNC’s back line kept its opponent shotless during the first half for the second time in the 2022 campaign. Despite the Tar Heels’ valiant effort to break the scoreless tie, both teams went into the break locked at zero apiece.

Carolina continued to push the pace into the second half to create more scoring chances. After a few solid attempts to take the lead, the home team finally got the chance it was looking for in the 82nd minute for what proved to be the game-winner.

A short pass from Sam Williams found Milo Garvanian on the left side who sent a cross which connected with Clarke at the center of the 6-yard box. Clarke then sent in a header to the lower right corner for his second goal of the season.

Garvanian’s team-leading third assist brings his point total up to 11 for the season, eclipsing his career-best of 10 set in 2021.
