No. 2 Duke Secures 2-0 Victory Against Howard

DURHAM – No. 2 Duke extended their unbeaten streak to 10 games on Tuesday night, defeating the visiting Howard Bison by a score of 2-0 at Koskinen Stadium. The Blue Devils (8-0-2, 3-0-1) were led by freshman Wayne Frederick’s first goal of his career and Jai Bean scoring his second goal in as many games.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Blue Devils were tested early, with Howard nearly putting their first shot of the game past Duke’s goalkeeper Eliot Hamill in the sixth minute. The graduate student reacted quickly and made the save to keep the Bison off the board.
  • Duke’s offense applied pressure shortly after with a flurry of shots within a 40 second window in the 12th and 13th minute. Shakur Mohammed, Ruben Mesalles and Jai Bean all had their shot attempts saved.
  • The Blue Devils opened their ledger less than 15 minutes later with Wayne Frederick’s first goal in a Duke uniform. The Cabin John, Md. native, tucked home a bouncing ball in the box following a corner kick in the 26th minute.
  • Duke possessed the ball for 67% of the second half, taking six total shots and putting four on target.
  • Bean scored his third goal of the season in the 64th minute, evading multiple defenders before sending a strong shot into the upper corner of the goal.

NOTES

  • Duke continued their best start to a season under John Kerr without a loss, reaching double digits with their 10th straight game on Tuesday night.
