Toronto FC sign forward Hugo Mbongue to homegrown contract

Toronto FC have signed forward Hugo Mbongue to a homegrown MLS contract through 2025 with an option for a further year.

The 18-year-old signed an MLS NEXT Pro contract with the club’s affiliate side, Toronto FC II, in May, going on to notch four goals and five assists in 14 appearances during the development league’s inaugural season.

“Hugo is a talented young striker who has worked hard to improve his overall game,” TFC head coach and sporting director Bob Bradley said in a club press release. “We look forward to seeing Hugo’s progress in his professional career and are confident that he’s going to become a player who can help the first team for many years.”

Mbongue is the younger brother of Colorado Rapids midfielder Ralph Prso, who left Toronto FC over the summer as part of the deal that brought Mark-Anthony Kaye to BMO Field.

The teenager joined TFC’s academy in March 2018 and, a year later, won Golden Boot awards at both the U.S. Soccer Development Academy National Championship and Generation Adidas Cup with the club’s U-15 side.

At international level, Mbongue is capped four times at both U-15 and U-20 level for Canada and played four times at the Concacaf U-20 Championship in Honduras earlier this year.
