“Obviously, a good start scoring in the opening minutes, but not our best half of soccer. Credit to Southern Miss for frustrating us a bit and making it difficult on us.

“I was very pleased with the second half. I thought we played quite well. We had a lot of the ball, a lot of territory and created a lot of chances. I thought our movement, activity and combination play was quite good. We will gladly take the win and move on.”

How It Happened

Macy Clem found the game-winning goal for the Crimson Tide in the fourth minute of action, heading a ball off a corner kick from Felicia Knox down and into the corner of the net. UA paced the half in shots, 9-1, as the two teams exited the field with the Tide up 1-0.

Alabama found opportunities in the second half but was unable to break through the Southern Miss’ defense until the 71st minute. Gessica Skorka intercepted a pass from the Golden Eagles and played the ball to Kat Rogers, who turned to find Aislin Streicek making a run towards goal. Streicek fired a low ball into the back of the net for the 2-0 advantage. UA led the half in shots 23-4, forcing the Southern Miss goalkeeper Kesaia Bruni to come up with 10 saves.
