Chelsea ‘prepared to pay up to £60m’ for winger and Everton should snap their hands off

Chelsea target Gordon

Chelsea are reportedly set to bid again for Everton attacker Anthony Gordon and they are ‘prepared’ to pay as much as £60m for the 21-year-old.

Gordon has attracted interest from Everton’s Premier League rivals after he enjoyed a breakout season in 2021/22.

Newcastle and Tottenham were keen on him earlier this summer but Chelsea have now emerged as his most likely destination.

The Blues had a £45m offer for Gordon rejected last week. That felt like too much but they are now ready to offer an extra £15m to sign the winger.

English players do tend to come with a premium in this current market, but this fee for Gordon is pretty extortionate for someone who has only had one full season in the Premier League.

Everton are in a difficult situation as they have limited options in attacking areas. This is not helped by Dominic Calvert-Lewin being out injured.

Ex-Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson thinks Everton could do with keeping Gordon, but they are not in a position to turn down an “astronomical offer”:

“They have to do their very best to hold off,” Robinson told Football Insider.

“You have to think that he will be worth the exact same amount if not more next summer.

“Everton have a real problem up front. Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s injury has left them short. They cannot afford to let Gordon go.

“The truth of the matter is, the financial fair play situation may play a part. If Chelsea are willing to pay an inflated price, he may leave. The board will not be able to turn it down if Chelsea come in with an astronomical offer. That could be the problem.

“There will be a price that Everton simply cannot turn down because of their financial situation.”

A £60m bid would be classed as an “astronomical offer” and according to Sky Sports, this is what Chelsea are ‘prepared’ to pay.

This is the total fee that includes add-ons. Their report notes that Everton have always insisted that Gordon is not for sale, but their hand may be forced on this occasion.

Chelsea have already paid around £180m on new recruits and their splurge will likely exceed £300m if they get all of their targets through the door.

They are also looking to sign £85m-rated Wesley Fofana, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s move to Chelsea is ‘edging closer’.
