Newcastle to make ‘formal bid’ for Calvert-Lewin after giving up on £60m star

Arsenal boosted by Everton troubles

Newcastle have reportedly turned their attention to signing Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin having bowed out of the race for Bayer Leverkusen star Moussa Diaby.

Eddie Howe was reportedly keen on luring Diaby – who notched 13 goals and 12 assists in 25 Bundesliga appearances last term – to St James’ Park but has been put off by competition from Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United, as well as his £60m price tag.

And the Express now claims Howe and his transfer team will now approach Everton over a move for Calvert-Lewin.

The England international, who has also been linked with Arsenal, was injured for most of last season but is seen by the Magpies as a decent signing to cpmpete with Callum Wilson for a place in the starting XI.

Everton are understood to be reluctant to allow one of their prize assets leave this summer, especially not to a direct rival, but the report states that Newcastle will test the waters with a formal bid in the hopes of turning the striker’s head.

Calvert-Lewin is under contract at Goodison park until 2025 and manager Frank Lampard said last month that the 25-year-old remains “absolutely focussed” at Everton.

Lampard said: “He has not said anything to me like that,” the 43-year-old said last month.

“He trains well and we speak a lot, and he’s said nothing like that. I’m not silly, this is football and he’s a player that would be wanted by clubs because of the level of player he is.

“There are not many strikers out there. They cost a lot of money. I am not worried about him at all and I wouldn’t be worried about playing him in these games. He is absolutely focused on the job. He’s been a big player for Everton and Everton have been a big club for him in his career.
