Ralph Hasenhuttl sends warning to squad as Southampton suffer heavy defeat

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl believes his side are still not safe from the drop after they suffered a 3-0 loss to Brentford.

Two quick-fire goals from Pontus Jansson and Yoane Wissa after fifteen minutes meant Southampton had an uphill battle early doors to compete with. Despite retaining more possession, the Saints never looked like getting back into the game, and a third goal for Brentford finished the game off. The defeat leaves them eight points above the drop, however 18th placed Everton have played three games less than them.

And Hasenhuttl has stated that despite reaching the 40-point landmark, his side are not clear of the drop just yet.

He told BBC Match of the Day: “They were the better team in and around the boxes. If you do nice things in between the two boxes it’s not interesting. They have been the far better team.

“Forty points might not be enough [to stay up]. Two games so we have to be absolutely focused.”

Despite holding 61% of possession, Southampton had less shots on target than the hosts.

While struggling in front of goal, Southampton also have problems at the back.

The Saints have conceded 61 goals from 36 games – with only three sides conceding more this season.

Hasenhuttl said: “We are struggling to score goals. It’s not only on our strikers. We have defended really poorly today.

Having admitted his side are not clear from relegation, Hasenhuttl went on to say things must change at the club.

With just two games left to play, one more win will secure safety for the Saints.

However, the Austrian coach admitted his side are not showing enough quality to take all three points from a game.

“We knew how we can create but it’s up to us up front to take something from the chances. Otherwise all the effort we put in is for nothing. They’ve shown how you can win a game in the moment.
