Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool extension ‘suggests he’s been made promises’ over two things, per pundit

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp

The recent contract extension handed to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp “suggests he’s been made promises,” thinks Kevin Phillips.

Klopp has managed to elevate Liverpool back to great Premier League status. There had been some rough seasons for the Reds not long before the German took over.

Indeed, they failed to finish inside the top four in successive seasons from 2009/10 to 2012/13. However, Klopp has done his best to cement his side’s place towards the top of the league since being at the club.

Other than his first season in charge, he has never failed to make the top four, and has led his side to multiple successes. Of course, Liverpool won the Champions League in 2018/19, and ended a 30-year wait to win the top flight the following season.

As such, it would have been a massive boost to everyone at the club when his new deal, running until 2026, was announced recently.

In fact, former Premier League striker Phillips thinks it may be a positive for another reason, too. Indeed, he thinks Liverpool may soon be delivered another bonus regarding Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

“This new deal suggests he’s been made promises, for sure,” he told Football Insider.

“He could have been made assurances about massive funds in the transfer market, assurances about the contracts of Salah and Mane.

“If you’re the owner, why would you not do everything in your power to keep him at the football club?”

Naturally, it makes sense for Liverpool to want Klopp to continue given the great period the club has enjoyed under him.

Klopp may have big ambitions to keep role

Phillips also mentioned the possibility of Steven Gerrard taking the Liverpool job at some point down the line. However, Klopp will no doubt want to remain in his position as long as possible.

As such, he could have big plans in place, following his contract extension.

“I think we all know Steven Gerrard is being groomed to take over, but he’s not quite ready – so why not keep the best?”…
