Anthony Gordon changes his tune after ‘watching back’ Everton penalty appeal against Liverpool

Anthony Gordon battles Trent Alexander-Arnold

Anthony Gordon ‘can see why’ Stuart Attwell didn’t give Everton a penalty against Liverpool, although he remains frustrated with another major decision.

The winger was lively at Anfield, catching Liverpool out on the break several times. His role was to move Everton up the pitch alongside Richarlison and Demarai Gray, and he did that well.

Gordon, 21, also had a couple of penalty appeals. He moved past Naby Keita in the box and, after feeling the slightest of touches, went down. But the contact was minimal and Attwell gave him a yellow card for diving.

The second was far more controversial. Gordon raced into the penalty area with Joel Matip and the defender stood on his foot, forcing the attacker to go down once again. This time Attwell gave a goal kick, rather than a free-kick for diving or a spot-kick.

Despite shouting at the official during the first penalty call, Gordon changed his tune after reviewing it.

“The first one, I’ve watched back,” he said (via the Daily Mirror). “I’ve felt the contact and went down, but from a few angles I can see why [the referee] hasn’t given it. But it’s certainly not a yellow card because it’s not a dive.”

Anthony Gordon talks ‘strongest’ penalty appeal

Gordon thinks the challenge from Matip is more likely to be given as a spot-kick on another day.

“We could have had a penalty, in my opinion. But sometimes they just go against you and that’s just how football is at times,” he remarked.

“The second [appeal] was the strongest because he stood on my foot. Clearly, I’ve gone one-v-one with him and got the better of him and he’s stood on my foot, which has caused me severe pain and I’ve gone down.”

The 2-0 defeat leaves Everton on 29 points from 32 matches. They are in the bottom three after Burnley’s 1-0 victory over Wolves.

Frank Lampard’s men do have a game in hand, although there is now big pressure on them to win that match.

Their next outing is a home clash against Chelsea…
