Thomas Tuchel slams Chelsea performance on several fronts, but admits gloomy pre-match prediction came true

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel blasted several aspects of his team’s performance following the 4-1 defeat to Brentford at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues struggled in the first half and looked sluggish, with the Bees firmly on top in the opening stages. However, Thomas Frank’s side could not take advantage before the break.

And it was actually Chelsea who took the lead through an Antonio Rudiger thunderbolt off the post.

Nevertheless, Brentford hit back two minutes later and scored three goals in a blistering 10-minute spell to seal a famous win.

Chelsea subsequently responded and had chances to test Brentford’s nerve. Ultimately, though, they were not as clinical as the Bees, who had Christian Eriksen to thank for one of the goals in another landmark for the Dane after his return from a cardiac arrest.

“We lost control for 10 minutes,” Tuchel told Sky Sports in his assessment. “It was a tough start for us which is also not the first time after an international break.

“We were OK in the first half and had a very good start to the second half and took the lead. Maybe we thought it was already done and we got punished in 10 minutes.

“In general we allowed too many shots and in general we lacked energy. We looked mentally tired which is normal after being around the world.

“After scoring we forgot we still had 40 minutes to play. I think it was deserved we took the lead.”

Tuchel in fact admitted that he “did not have high expectations” of his team…
