‘The opponent is so tough’; Guardiola up for Liverpool battle as Man City down ‘difficult’ Burnley

Pep Guardiola felt conditions were against Manchester City scoring more goals against Burnley and urged his men to continue their fight with Liverpool.

The champions went into the Turf Moor encounter having seen Liverpool usurp them at the top of the standings. But they were soon back on top as first-half goals by Kevin de Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan gave them all three points. The Etihad outfit were totally dominant throughout the contest.

And they should have added to their tally as substitute Gabriel Jesus wasted a few decent opportunities. The Brazilian also hit the post late in the game.

Guardiola always knew it would be tough for his men to play their natural game at Burnley. And he admitted that another goal would have settled the nerves.

“We’re many years playing in these types of games,” he told PLP. “We scored early on so that helped us a lot. But the game is never finished until you score the third or fourth.

“The pitch was so difficult because the grass was high, no water and everything was so slow. But we did well and won the game.”

Next up in the league is a clash with Jurgen Klopp’s Reds. And Guardiola expects it to be a pivotal match in the race for the title.

“The next Premier League game we will play against Liverpool so we know they are going to win almost all the games – hopefully not the next one – but we will try to do the same,” he added.
